Wires Still Fall
I am I am I am
whatever the darkness says I am.
hearts are not angry fists and the silence
is nothing but a kitchen with the light on,
the gas still running.
it isn’t forgetfulness if there was nothing to remember.
the city doesn’t sleep and I should, more; deserving
breakfasts that mean something and dances in dresses
I do not fee l like burning. the champagne is illegal
and the light in the bathroom flickers when the water
runs; the water is always running.
my sunglasses are broken and the hat is seven sizes
larger than my hands held clasped. the headaches
are not aches – they are reminders.
flip the faucet.
turn off the lights.
dinner is burning and the calendar is always on the wrong month.
I feel like September; my hands are February;
the date says December and it is
too cold to see my breathing.
I am I am I am
goosebumps down my own neck,
a hole in the scarf.
dinner is burning and the paint is peeling and
I do not understand snow.
